Google has come out with a VOIP (Internet Phone) and IM (Instant Message) client built into one called Google Talk. You need a Gmail address for it to work.

They have also come out with a fantstic new version of the Google Desktop this is a must have for every computer.

This is really cool. A case-mod is a practice where a person modifies a computer case to give it a unique touch.

Some people take it to the next level. Jan Erik Vangentake is one of those people. He built a replica of Futurama's own Bender with a Mini-ITX-system and a slot-in DVD-player in the mouth. The antenna on the top is actually a WLAN-antenna, and the arms are bendable.

A speaker inside the "case" also spits out classic Bender quotes like "Bite my shiny metal ass!". This case-mod got several awards in case-mod competitions.

Toms hardware guide has a good story on this and a few other cool case mods. Check it out. The ComicBookGuy will own this someday...yes...someday.

First mobile phone virus discovered Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

TechnologyTHE first ever computer virus that can infect mobile phones has been discovered, anti-virus software developers said today, adding that up until now it has had no harmful effect.

The French unit of the Russian security software developer Kaspersky Labs said that that virus - called Cabir - appears to have been developed by an international group specialising in creating viruses which try to show "that no technology is reliable and safe from their attacks".

Cabir infects the Symbian operating system that is used in several makes of mobiles, notably the Nokia brand, and propagates through the new bluetooth wireless technology that is in several new mobile phones.

If the virus succeeds in penetrating the phone, it writes the inscription 'Caribe' on the screen and is then activated every time that the phone is turned on.

It is able to scan for phones that are also using the Bluetooth technology and is able to send a copy of itself to the first handset that it finds.

According to the anti-virus software developer F-Secure, the discovery of Cabir is proof that the technologies are now available to create viruses for mobile phones and that they are now known to the writers of computer viruses.

Anti-virus experts have been warning for months that mobile phone viruses are set to multipy, given the increasingly diverse uses of mobile phones.

TechnologyA small Canadian computer company has filed a patent infringement lawsuit seeking $500 million from Intel. All Computers Inc. claims Intel violated it's patent rights by using the company's circuitry in Pentium processors without a licence.

The circuitry controls the input frequency of the processors. Virtually every computer in the world utilizes the technology. If true Intel has been infringing on their patent since 1998, and has earned billions from the sale of computers that contain the circuitry.

The technology was developed by Mers Kutt, who started All Computers in 1971. Kutt received a patent for the circuitry in 1996. He apparantly contacted Intel officials after learning they were using his patent and offered to license it to the company but was ignored.

Something tells me this lawsuit isn't going anywhere.

3-D search engine Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

TechnologyOne of the big limitations of search engines is that for the most part they are powered by words alone. Google delivers pretty good results but can't actually examine the images it serves up. It mines the text surrounding the photos, and hopes for success.

However, researchers have developed new search engines that can mine catalogs of three-dimensional objects. All the users have to do is sketch what they're thinking of, and the search engines can produce comparable objects.

Princeton University has put a 3-D search engine on the Web that lets anyone sketch an object using a computer mouse and search for similar models in design databases.

It'd pretty cool and delivers some interesting results. Here is the link.

The search engine is experimental and can be a little slow so you will have to be patient.

TechnologyA war of words is breaking out between the creators of the Netsky, Bagle and MyDoom Windows worms. The malicious programs' creators are putting taunts and insults in successive variants of their viruses.

The spat began because Bagle's creators are jealous of all the media attention that the Netsky virus is getting.

"I would much rather they ranted at each other on message boards instead of in raw code," said Graham Cluley from anti-virus firm Sophos.

    Bitter struggle

The war of words has being conducted via fresh variants of the viruses which have different messages hidden inside them. There are now nine versions of Bagle, six versions of Netsky and seven versions of Mydoom circulating online.

Five of these viruses made their unwelcome debut on 3 March as the slanging match between the different virus writing groups escalated. Anti-virus firms discovered the insults inside the viruses when they were being taken apart to find out how they differed from earlier versions of these malicious programs.

Inside Bagle.J, along with a string of profanity, is a message reading: "don't ruine (sic) our bussiness, wanna start a war?"

The response to this seems to be inside Netsky.F, released the day after Bagle.J, which contains a message reading: "Bagle - you are a looser!!!! (sic)".

Following legal threat, VeriSign agrees to suspend online search service Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

TechnologyThe Internet's key traffic cop bowed to pressure Friday and agreed to suspend a new online search service blamed for such side-effects as disabling junk e-mail filters and networked printers.

The decision came hours after the main oversight body for the Internet threatened legal action against VeriSign Inc. unless it shut down its site Finder service by Saturday evening. The company manages ".com" and ".net" addresses as well as the global network's central directory computers.

Internet computers around the world regularly check VeriSign's lists to properly route e-mail and requests for ".com" and ".net" sites. When there is no match, VeriSign's computers previously sent back a "no such name" message. But on Sept. 15, VeriSign began diverting traffic to its search site.

Spam filters that had depended on the "no such name" message stopped working properly, as have some networked printers. Meanwhile, mobile web services have been swamped with more data than the normal "no such name" response, potentially generating higher phone bills.

TechnologyLOS ANGELES (AP) -- Makers of the most popular online file-sharing network are suing entertainment companies for copyright infringement, alleging the companies used unauthorized versions of its software to snoop on users in their efforts to battle piracy.

Sharman Networks, the company behind the Kazaa file-sharing software, filed a federal lawsuit Monday, accusing the movie studios and the Recording Industry of America of using "Kazaa Lite," a replica of its software without advertising, to get onto the network. Sharman claims its copyright was violated because Kazaa Lite is an unauthorized version of its free software.
