Suburban St. Louis lake vanishes Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

EnvironmentTo folks around Wildwood Mo., it's downright freaky: an entire 9.3-hectare lake vanished in a matter of days, as if someone had pulled the plug on a bathtub.

Lake Chesterfield went down a sinkhole this week, leaving homeowners in this affluent St. Louis suburb wondering if their property values disappeared along with their lakeside views. That lake was 23 acres - no small lake. What once was an oasis for waterfowl and sailboats was nothing but a muddy, crackled pit.

Local residents said they noticed that the lake, after being swelled by torrential rains weeks earlier, began falling last weekend. By Wednesday, the manmade lake - which was up to three metres deep in spots - was gone.

EnvironmentA bird believed to have been extinct for over a century has been found alive and warbling in Fiji, a bird group reported.

BirdLife Fiji researchers rediscovered the long-legged warbler (Trichocichla rufa), last seen in 1894, and managed to photograph it for the first time ever. They also recorded its "beautiful warbling songs."

The group said in a statement they found 12 pairs of the rare bird in Wabu Forest Reserve, near Mount Tomaniivi, which at 4,341 feet, is the highest point on the Pacific nation's main island Viti Levu.

It looks like those Segway Scooters aren't as safe as people thought...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The maker of the Segway Human Transporter has agreed to recall the motorized scooters because riders have been injured falling off when its batteries are low.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Friday, saying that three people had been injured. One suffered a head wound and needed stitches.

The recall involves about 6,000 of the single-rider, two-wheeled scooters that can travel up to 12 mph. The scooter uses gyroscopes to keep it upright, making it less likely to fall or be knocked over.
