Science FictionHere is some good news for Farscape fans...

The "Farscape" franchise will live on as a live-action Web series. Sci Fi Channel executive Craig Engler confirmed that the company has closed a deal with The Jim Henson Company for a 10-episode webisode series. So far no stars or writers are signed to appear and no story plotted, but if successful, the project could lead to re-igniting the franchise on the air.

And for all the BSG fans out there...

This fall, Sci Fi Channel will launch "Battlestar Galactica" minisodes related to fall's "Battlestar" movie "Razor," debuting Nov. 24. Eight episodes running two or three minutes each will first air on Sci Fi Channel (air dates/times yet to be determined) and later at SciFi.com.

The minisodes tell the story of a young Commander Adama (Nico Cortez) who discovers a dangerous Cylon weapon during the Cylon War that will come back to haunt him and his crew 40 years later. The shorts were writte by Michael Taylor and directed by Wayne Rose and Felix Alcala.

The film "Battlestar Galactica: Razor" will show viewers Lee Adama (Jamie Bamber) on his first mission as commander of the Battlestar Pegasus and will reveal how former Pegasus leader Admiral Cain (Michelle Forbes) dealt with the original Cylon attack on the Colonies.

SCI FI Channel recently announced that Lucy Lawless will join the cast of its original series Battlestar Galactica in the upcoming third season. Lawless will become a recurring cast member, reprising her role as D'Anna Biers in a 10-episode arc. The third season begins production in Vancouver, Canada, in April.

Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) first appeared on Galactica in the second-season episode "Final Cut," playing investigative journalist Biers, who arrived on the Galactica to do an expose on alleged crew misconduct that resulted in the death of four civilians. Eventually, the audience learns that Biers is actually one of the human-looking Cylon agents, who was sent to Galactica on a covert reconnaissance mission.

Lawless' second guest appearance will be in the highly anticipated episode entitled "Downloaded," which gives viewers their first real glimpse into the Cylon world.

Trek writer/producer Michael Piller dies Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

    Science Fiction

Michael Piller, a longtime executive producer of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, lost his battle with cancer today. The co-creator of Deep Space Nine and Voyager and writer of Star Trek: Insurrection, whose most recent production was the ABC Family series Wildfire, died at age 57.

Piller, who produced more than 500 hours of Star Trek, had struggled with an aggressive form of head and neck cancer but kept his condition private from many of his associates. StarTrek.com notes that in addition to his writing and producing credits on the Star Trek shows, Piller co-created UPN's Legend and more recently USA's The Dead Zone, along with his son, Shawn Piller.

Born in Portchester, New York, Piller worked at one time as a television censor. Before he became a full-time writer, he was an Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist with CBS News in New York. Stints as an editor and news director in Charlotte and Chicago preceded a job as a programming executive. Piller's credits included police dramas such as Cagney & Lacey and Miami Vice; in addition to The Dead Zone and Wildfire, he co-created and executive produced Group One Medical.

After joining the writing staff of The Next Generation, Piller created Deep Space Nine together with Rick Berman - the first show to bear the name of Star Trek in which Gene Roddenberry was not directly involved. Later Berman and Piller co-created Voyager with Jeri Taylor. After leaving his production job with the Star Trek franchise to work with Shawn at Piller Squared, Michael Piller remained a creative consultant on Star Trek: Voyager.

Although StarTrek.com reports that he was ill for a long time, Piller remained active in television work until very recently. The Dead Zone will begin its fifth season on USA in 2006, while Wildfire has been picked up for a second season by ABC Family (the series stars Nana Visitor, who played Kira on Deep Space Nine).

Piller served on the advisory board for the Department of Communications Studies at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was also supportive of students. Piller also started the internship program for would-be television writers at Star Trek and the spec script submissions that allowed several unagented writers to be discovered by the franchise.

Our condolences go out to his family and friends. Condolence cards can be sent to:

James Doohan, best known for the roll of Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott - or Scotty - passed away this morning at his home after battling Alzheimer's and pneumonia. He was 85.

Born in Vancouver in March 1920, Doohan was raised in Sarnia, Ont. After the Second World War, where he took part in the Juno Beach invasion on D-Day, Doohan became an actor, beginning on radio dramas in the 40's.

His roles include the 1953 CBC series Space Command and the 1956 CBC-TV drama Flight Into Danger, author Arthur Hailey's first screenplay. The show would served as an inspiration for Hailey's debut novel, Runaway Zero-Eight, published in 1958, and the whole 1970s disaster film genre.

Doohan's ability to master many dialects and different accents impressed Gene Roddenberry, the creator Star Trek, in 1966. On the strength of a strong Scottish accent, producers chose Doohan for the original cast of Star Trek, which ran from 1966 to 1969.

Scotty served as the Starship Enterprise's chief engineer, spoke with a thick Scottish accent, and was seen as a "miracle-worker". The character was reportedly born in Aberdeen, Scotland. He appeared in the first seven Star Trek movies, and an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation: "Relics". Scott held the rank of lieutenant commander during the original series, had been promoted to commander by the time of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and received a promotion to captain in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

Scotty's role in operating the Enterprise transporter system inspired the popular catch phrase "Beam me up, Scotty", which gained currency in popular culture even beyond Star Trek fans, though that exact phrase was never heard in any original episode of the show.

PRIMER is an ingenious movie about the perils of ingenuity, and a reminder that the best sci-fi action requires you to think.

PRIMER is set in the industrial park/suburban tract-home fringes of an unnamed contemporary city where two young engineers, Abe and Aaron, are members of a small group of men who work by day for a large corporation while conducting extracurricular experiments on their own time in a garage.

While tweaking their current project, a device that reduces the apparent mass of any object placed inside it by blocking gravitational pull, they accidentally discover that it has some highly unexpected capabilities--ones that could enable them to do and to have seemingly anything they want. Taking advantage of this unique opportunity is the first challenge they face. Dealing with the consequences is the next.

A Dalek has been kidnapped and held to ransom.

The Dalek, believed to be an original series prop, was stolen from Wookey Hole Caves near Wells on Monday.

On Thursday staff arrived to find the plunger on the doorstep with a note which read, "We are holding the Dalek captive. We demand further instructions from the Doctor."

"For the safety of the human race we have disarmed and removed its destructive mechanism."

The note was signed by the Guardians of the Planet Earth. Police either think its a student prank or linked to G8 Summit protests.

The owners have offered £500 reward for the model's return, and may rope in Colin Baker to speak to the felons.
